THE DESTINATION

Where is Soma Bay? If you are a windsurfer, and you have been to Egypt then you will probably have heard of Safaga and Soma Bay is just 10 minutes drive north of there. Personally we find the industrial skyline of Safaga a little offensive on the eye so it was with great delight that we heard of the newly constructed Intercontinental Abu Soma Resort, where you can enjoy the same wind with clear uninterrupted views of the Red Sea.

A large expanse of beach to land and launch, plenty of shallow, flat water for training. This spot was previously only accessible by boat from Safaga, an amazing place to ride and a great location.

THE SPOT

The spot consists of two main bays; one directly in front of the hotel and the other just up wind of the centre. There is a good-sized waist high area just in front of the centre that is perfect for beginners. Both bays offer super flat conditions although the up wind bay has the added benefit of super clean wind. This spot is just amazing for beginners and intermediate looking to build confidence.

THE WIND

There is wind throughout the year, with some of the best in the summer. However, as Soma Bay also enjoys at least 1 Beaufort more than Hurghada further up the coast, it is a popular spot throughout the year.

In the summer months, from May to Oct, the average wind is around 22 knots with the afternoons sometimes getting up to 25 / 30 (especially in September)! In the winter it is mostly big kite weather (14 - 16's)..

THE KITESURFING

Soma Bay is good for all levels but is especially good for complete beginners or those looking to progress. There is a very high level of instruction on hand and the shallow flat water is just perfect for training.

Combined with the facilities of a 5 star hotel, all on site, this resort is ideal for kiters with families or non-kiting partners.

THE OTHER ACTIVITIES

Soma Bay is a secluded spot for those wishing to just relax in luxury if not on the water. However, there are a variety of excursions, tours and day trips to the interior of this fascinating country. Egypt is probably the world's oldest civilization having emerged from the Nile Valley around 3,100 years ago. This "Gift of the Nile" as described by Herodotus boasts a longer recorded history than any other country on earth. A country of legends and mysteries, the birthplace of ancient civilization with a third of the world's most magnificent and awesome monuments and treasures.

With a wealth of destination knowledge and travel industry experience, we specialise in tailor made tours so please ask for an special itinerary to take in specific tour / sightseeing.

THE WINDSURFING

Soma Bay is ideal for those wanting to combine windsurfing and kitesurfing. The conditions are very good for all levels and the area is large enough to allow both activities without any clash

THE NIGHTLIFE

Soma Bay does not have a town so this is a hotel based holiday. Safaga is the closest town but has very little to offer in the evenings, so if you feel the need for bright lights then head for Safaga or even Hurghada.

UK / EU passport holders should have a full 10 year passport valid until at least 6 months after date of return. Other passport holders please check with Egyptian Embassy (020 7235 9777).
